Founded around 1830 The name Aqua Mansa is Spanish for peaceful waters.
The Aqua Mansa community spanned both sides of the Santa Ana river.
Aqua Mansa was the first settlement in the San Bernardino valley after the close of the
mission period.
It had the first church, the first school, and was the first to develop a lumbering industry.
It was the largest settlement between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Los Angeles.
Until the Mormon Settlement in San Bernardino in the 1850's
After 50 years the town of Aqua Mansa virtually disappeared.
Today all that remains is the cemetery and a replica of the old church which serves as
a museum.
Aqua Mansa flourished until January 1862, when a great flood filled the Santa Ana river
from bluff to bluff and destroyed the west bank community, leaving only the cemetery,
the chapel and the Cornelius Jensen.s adjoining store built in 1854.
Vandalism to the cemetery. Which happens to be a felony in the State
of California.
